Self Improvement Tip of the Day: It’s About Give and Take

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: It’s About Give and Take

The giving and receiving of favours is one of the fundamentals of human relationships. Some people may not even be aware they are keeping track of favours given and received, but the information will still be stored unconsciously at a subconscious level, even if they aren’t naturally inclined to try to call in any favours. Other people will remember almost everything they’ve ever done for anyone and be on the lookout for opportunities to have favours returned.

This applies to friendships, marriages and partnerships and all types of human interaction, including business and political relationships, where there a many examples of people being compromised due to favours being called in or made public.

Our ability to build relationships is one of the fundamentals of success. Generally, an important part of how we are judged as people in our relationships with others is by our attitude towards giving and receiving. Some people are less inclined to give than others, and over time this brings about imbalance in relationships. This is likely to affect the relationships and often, over time, cause relationships to breakdown.

However, people with a more generous nature are often more happy, popular and successful than average. But this is only one of many good reasons for being generous without expecting anything in return.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Joy Of Giving

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Joy Of Giving

Christmas is traditionally the time of year that people think about giving gifts to loved ones, friends and colleagues.

Generally at Christmas time gifts are given on a reciprocal basis, which simply mean that gifts are given with the expectation of receiving a gift in return. This is a simple example of the Law of Reciprocity. The Law of Reciprocity states that when someone gives you something, or does you some sort of a favour, you feel an obligation to give something back, or return the favour in some way.

No doubt you’ve hear the old saying ‘you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’, which can be applied to almost anything. This is a simple example of the law of reciprocity.

The giving and repaying of favours is something that is common amongst all cultures on earth (it probably even applies to some animals too). Even though it is rarely openly discussed, when someone does something for you, they usually expect something in return. This doesn’t mean they expect exactly the same type of favour to be repaid, but they will usually feel they are owed in some way. However, it is basic human nature, even amongst the most generous people, to tally up the favours they are owed by other people.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - You Can Create the Right Conditions

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - You Can Create the Right Conditions

Whatever it is you want to achieve, when you are in a highly focused state you can get incredible results. And with some thought and planning, you can create the conditions that will help to make it happen both more easily and more often.

When you get into ‘flow’ you become totally immersed in what you are doing. You will instinctively know what to do next. You may feel your abilities stretched, but you won’t be overwhelmed. You’ll not only get great results, but you’ll also feel good about yourself and enjoy what you’re doing much more.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Work from a List

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Work from a List

Some of us feel we know what we need to do and so don’t bother to write things down. Few things will inhibit your progress or prevent you from getting in ‘flow’ more than the feeling of being overwhelmed, or that you have so much to do that you don’t know where to start.

The simple act of writing down everything that you need to do will clear your mind and let you more effectively organize your workload. This will also help you to prioritise your tasks. Then keep working on your most important task before starting anything else. This is one of the very best ways to get in ‘flow’ and increase your productivity.

begin. Once the battle is started, all that is within and

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Rearrange Your Work Place

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Rearrange Your Work Place

If you work in an open plan office, do whatever you can to eliminate, or at the very least, minimize distractions from other people. Try to rearrange your working space so other people distract you less. You could try changing the position of your desk or other furniture, or perhaps use plants or screens to form barriers. It may be nice being able to look out a window or to see what’s going on around you, but if you are naturally easily distracted, you may well be much more productive facing the opposite direction.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Don’t be a Slave to Emails and Phones

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Don’t be a Slave to Emails and Phones

There are many other ways we can allow ourselves to be distracted. It’s hard to imagine how we ever got by before emails, but is it really necessary to have your programme open all day and stop whatever you’re doing every time you hear the arrival of a new email? This is on one of the greatest of all distractions for most of us. Instant communication is often important, but could you just check and respond to your emails a few times a day?

Mobile phones and even office phones are another great cause of distraction that can be difficult to ignore. If you are working on something that requires your full attention, why not turn off your phones? Everyone expects to have to leave messages for people quite often anyway, could you do this regularly and talk to people when it’s most convenient for you rather than for them?

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Clear the Clutter

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to Get Into the Flow of Success - Clear the Clutter

Eliminate clutter from your workspace. If you have an untidy desk and office space you are not only likely to waste time looking for things you need, but you are also giving yourself ready made distractions that will most likely slow down your work rate and reduce your chances of getting into ‘flow’. Some people claim to work better in untidy conditions, but this is very rarely true. Take the time to clear the clutter and keep it clear and your productivity will certainly increase.
