Self Improvement Tip of the Day: IT CAN BE EASIER SAID THAN DONE!

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: IT CAN BE EASIER SAID THAN DONE!

It can be difficult to achieve these conditions, particularly if you work in a busy office environment. There will usually be interaction with your boss and co workers. And of course there’ll be phone calls and emails to deal with, which you’ll also have to deal with even if you work on your own, or at home.

These all keep you from your work which in turn causes you to worry and get stressed about the work building up and not getting done. This can be a vicious circle and you can all too easily find yourself spending more time dealing with distractions and worrying about your work then you spend actually working.

Many people have difficulty concentrating and maintaining their focus. Focus is usually easy for children. You’ve no doubt seen children so engrossed in something they are doing that it almost impossible for their mother or father to get their attention or switch them to doing something they want them to do.

This is another one of those things that many of us grow out of as we become adults. However, some people seem to be able to concentrate and focus easily and as a result, they are highly productive and successful.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: THE IDEAL ‘FLOW’ CONDITIONS

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: THE IDEAL ‘FLOW’ CONDITIONS

Pressure inevitably affect our ability to concentrate. Ideally you should be under enough pressure to fully engage your attention, but not enough to inhibit your performance.

How you feel about your ability to successfully complete any task affects how well you can focus. If you have doubts, negative thought are likely to creep in which, which will make it difficult to maintain a positive outlook. If you are not thinking positively it will be much more difficult to focus and get into flow.

You should be relaxed and alert, with minimal distractions. You should also ensure you are dealing with the task at hand and keep moving forward, rather than analyzing and rehashing your performance and what you’ve already completed.

Having little or no concern or fear in how you appear to others, or what others might think, will make it easier to get into a state of flow in any activity you undertake.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: GETTING INTO THE FLOW OF SUCCESS (continued)

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: GETTING INTO THE FLOW OF SUCCESS (continued)

Wikipedia describes ‘Flow’ as “The mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Many other terms and idioms exist for this mental state: to be on the ball, in the zone, or in the groove.”

The notion of ‘flow’ was developed by Dr Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi who has devoted his life's work to the study of what makes people truly happy, satisfied and fulfilled. He has conducted extensive research and written several book on the subject of ‘flow’ and being ‘in flow’.

People enter a flow state when they are fully absorbed in activity during which they lose their sense of time and have feelings of great satisfaction.

Csikszentmihalyi describes flow as "being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost."

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: GETTING INTO THE FLOW OF SUCCESS

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: GETTING INTO THE FLOW OF SUCCESS

I’m sure we’ve all experienced occasions when everything is just going our way and we can’t seem to do anything wrong. All obstacles disappear and you get results and achieve things you’ve rarely achieved before. This may be in some sporting or athletic endeavour, or something in your professional or personal life. Sometimes when these events happen it can seem like we are an observer watching ourselves. Many people experience feelings of time standing still or timelessness and feelings of well being and happiness verging on ecstasy.

These occasions are often described as experiencing ‘flow’ or being ‘in flow’. Is this just psycho babble or management jargon, or is there something more to ‘flow’? Is this a state that we can actively enter at will that can help us to achieve more happiness and success in our lives?

‘There are two main strategies we can adopt to improve the quality of life. The first is to try making external conditions match our goals. The second is to change how we experience external conditions to make them fit our goals better.’- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
