Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Small Changes Can Make Big Differences

We can be our own worst enemies in relation to stress because we can bring a reasonable amount of it on ourselves. If we take the time to think about what causes us stress it's likely we can take measures that will decrease our stress levels. As small changes in our behaviour can significantly lower our stress levels, it's well worth making the effort to look at our actions and reactions to see what we can do to make our lives less stressed.

Self Improvement Quote of the Day:

"Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow." - Douglas Pagels

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Not All Stress Is Bad.

Have you even seen a top sportsman who is completely relaxed leading up to an important competition? Even if they don't look it, you can be pretty sure they are feeling the pressure.

The same applies to performers of any kind such as singers or actors going on stage, or anyone who has to make a speech. Public speaking can be one of the most stressful of all experiences for many people, but even the most seasoned speakers will feel tense before making a speech.

In all of these cases the stress and adrenalin can be a major contributing factor to making people perform at their best. Without feeling some stress and pressure it's unlikely you will perform at your optimum level at almost anything. Stress can give you bursts of energy to enhance your performance just when you need it most. If anything's too easy you're less likely to put in much of an effort and it will show. Stress can also force us to adapt to new unfamiliar circumstance and to develop and grow as people.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Learn From An Expert

One simple thing that can reduce stress levels is to simply try to be more easygoing. Try not to take things so seriously and avoid being confrontational or argumentative. Taking a conciliatory approach to our dealing with others and looking for win – win outcomes will definitely help to reduce stress.

Do you know someone who never seems to be stressed or manages to stay calm even in the most high pressure situation? It may come naturally but they may have made the effort to learn how to cope with stress. Watch them and try to find out how they do it and what they do differently. Or ask them, most people are more than happy to help others and often flattered to be asked.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Most Of Us Would Benefit From Better Eating Habits

If we eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and ensure we get adequate rest our body is better able to cope with stress whenever it occurs.

Most of us have very busy lifestyles and it's all too easy to fall into unhealthy and erratic eating habits. Skipping breakfast, eating lunch on the run and having takeaways or ready meals for dinner are all too common. Eating unhealthy meals and eating irregularly may save us time when we're busy, but it actually makes us less able to deal with the pressures of our hectic lives and exacerbates stress and stress related health problems.

We should all make the effort to eat something for breakfast, and to try to eat more healthily generally, including more fresh fruit and vegetables. Taking the time to eat proper meals and taking a break from our work and other pressures will definitely help to lower our stress levels.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Take A Break And Have A Laugh

Having a hot bath or listening to relaxing music can help, as can meditation or other relaxation techniques. Be optimistic and positive as much possible, and try to look at the lighter side of life. Laughter is one of the best ways to make you feel good and take your mind off daily pressures. You can read more about the benefits humour can have here:

Self_Improvement_Directory_Tips You've Got To Laugh!

Taking up a hobby or pastime is a great way to relax. Is there something you enjoyed doing when you were young that you haven't thought about for years? There are a countless number of different pastimes that people participate in to help them unwind. Some people have the most unlikely hobbies, what could you take up that could help you to relax?

We should also try to get away from our usual routine and take vacations as regularly as we can manage. Even if longer breaks are difficult, getting away for a weekend or even for a night every now and then is a great way to rejuvenate ourselves and relieve stress. Even a day out in country or at the seaside can do wonders.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Take Time To Relax

Exercise can be one of the best antidotes to stress. If you enjoy a sport or physical pastime try to fit it into your week. Even a brisk walk and getting some fresh air will increase the flow of oxygen through your bloodstream and to your brain which will help to lower your stress levels.

One of the most obvious of all ways to reduce stress is to make sure you take the time to simply relax and unwind.

Relaxing with family or friends is one of the greatest of all stress busters. Relaxing and completely taking your mind of the pressures of life can do wonders to help recharge your batteries. If you have problems on your mind, family and friends can also help you to see things from a different perspective.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Better Time Management Reduces Stress

Many people are stressed because they feel they have too much to do and not enough time to do it. Most of us have this problem, but the people who suffer a lot of stress as a result probably haven't made the effort to think about how they manage time or about prioritising their tasks and the demands on their time. You'll find more ideas that can help with time management here:

Self_Improvement_Directory_Tips Do You Have The Time?

Lack of sleep is another fact of life for many people. Our bodies need time to recover from our daily exertions and we should all try to get as near to our ideal quota of sleep if not every night, at least as often as possible.

Many people turn to alcohol, nicotine, caffeine or other drugs to help deal with stress. These may help in moderation or in the short term, but in the longer term are likely to have just the opposite effect, as well as bringing on many other problems.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Ways To Reduce Your Stress Levels

Stress is a fact of life for all of us. We all have some stress in most areas of our lives. More working days are lost through stress related issues than for any other single reason. It is estimated that up to 75% of all illness is stress related, including serious illnesses.

Some people seem to suffer a lot less than others. This may come naturally, but it's likely these people have learnt how to more effectively handle stress. This is one of the most valuable skills we can learn and there are many things we can do that can really make a difference.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: It's Easy To Make A Difference

Making a contribution is certainly not only for the wealthy. Absolutely anyone can help others, if not financially, by committing time. Millions of people of modest means do so, and not only do they help to make the world a better place, but they have richer lives as a result.

If you've reached all your goals and you still don't feel satisfied, it's possibly because you haven't adapted and updated your goals to suit the person you've become in achieving them, or haven't thought about your next challenges. Or perhaps what you're really looking for now is a higher purpose that you may not have yet been able to define.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Need to Contribute and Connect

The need to contribute or to make a spiritual connection is also the need that drove Andrew Carnegie, the richest man in the world and the man who was ultimately responsible for Napoleon Hill writing Think and Grow Rich, the book that started the modern personal development industry. Carnegie gave away most of his vast fortune, funding and establishing countless libraries, schools, universities and other institutions which continue to educate and help millions of people worldwide today.

This was philanthropy on the grandest scale that few can replicate, but many people feel driven to contribute to worthwhile causes as they become better off financially. Cynics may think that many well off people only give to charity to avoid paying tax or for similar reasons, but this certainly isn't always the case. There are many, many genuinely philanthropic wealthy people. Some will have always been that way inclined, and some will become more committed to helping others as they become wealthier, perhaps due to gratitude and wanting to give something back, or the genuine desire to make a contribution to others.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: A Higher Connection

Self improvement and continuous personal growth is one of the basic human needs. In Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs this is actually the highest level of human need, the desire to grow and develop, not to stand still and remain complacent or self satisfied, or as some would say, to get stuck in a rut.

There's also another level that was later added to Maslow's hierarchy – the need to contribute, to give something back and to make a difference in some way, or to make some sort of spiritual connection. Many believe this is where true happiness is to be found, although few people take this course because they are seeking happiness. This isn't even a choice for many people; more like it chooses them, or they feel drawn to it. This is the need that has driven people like Mother Teresa, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, even Bob Geldof to name but a few well known examples.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Why We Need To Adapt

We become different people as we work towards and achieve our goals. Whilst it's important to have goals it's also important not be dogmatic about them, we need to be able to change and adapt them as we go along, If you aren't getting the results you want, perhaps there's something wrong with your approach or your plans and you need to alter them. In some case it may be necessary to start all over again. This isn't being defeated, this is realising that changes were needed. You can still maintain the same ultimate goals, this is just taking a different route to get there.

Even when things are going well, it may still need necessary to adapt. As we develop as people our priorities change and the things that were once of great importance become less so. This is natural. For example, the things that were most important when we are single become less important when we enter serious relationships, and change again as we become parents.

Regularly reviewing our goals and values should stop us from getting to a certain point and feeling let down. Much of this happens automatically anyway, but if we actively think about it will make it even easier.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How To Make Sure Reaching Your Goals Makes You Happy

What can you do if you've established what you want, made plans to achieve it, worked heard and succeeded in achieving everything you ever hoped for, only to find yourself wondering – is that all there is?

If for example, you wanted to be a millionaire and reached that goal. One good reason for possibly feeling somewhat deflated is that people change. The great Jim Rohn made a very profound observation about this very subject – that the person you become in pursuit of a goal is much more important than reaching the goal itself. The skills and you have to learn, the obstacles you have to overcome, the character traits you have to develop and so on are what really matters.
