Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Empathy In Business

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Empathy In Business

All of the abovementioned can make a difference in all our communication, whether with friends, family or work related. There are also some specifics that can be particularly important in a work or business environment, for a boss, an employer or an employee.

Smile at people and think about your facial expression. This doesn't mean having a fixed grin on your face, which can make you appear insincere or even simple. Try to be natural and respond appropriately to what the other person is communicating. If you're really paying attention this should come naturally anyway.

'Smile at each other, smile at your wife, smile at your husband, smile at your children, smile at each other - it doesn't matter who it is - and that will help you to grow up in greater love for each other.' - Mother Teresa

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Think About Your Encounters With People

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Think About Your Encounters With People

Thinking about the non verbal signals we give out when communicating can make a big difference. It can help to make us more empathetic and other people will notice and respond accordingly.

You can practice being empathetic quite easily in daily life. Think about your encounters with people. Those involving disagreement may be the best place to start. If you've had a disagreement or confrontation, try to put yourself in the other person's position. What could they have been thinking? Were they really being difficult just for the sake of it? Could there have been factors involved you weren't aware of? There is always more than one side to every story. This can be hard as we tend to take a position we may have trouble seeing beyond, but working at this exercise will definitely help you to be more empathetic.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Get The Whole Picture

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Get The Whole Picture

It has been estimated that less that 10% of the total message that anyone receives from any communication with others comes from what they actually say. This works both ways. Not only must we work at paying attention to what others are saying, we must work at our non verbal communication both when we are listening and talking. It can be very easy to give the wrong messages or the wrong signals when listening to other people that can have them think we aren't really interested or paying attention. Something as simple as a frown or raising an eyebrow or looking vague can give the wrong impression.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Think Before Responding

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Think Before Responding

If you are having a conversation with another person and they listen intently to what you are saying, and then take their time responding, what they are probably doing is showing you they have paid attention. They probably want to digest your information and give you a considered response rather than making a knee-jerk reaction. They are actively listening to you rather than just going through the motions.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Don't Interrupt People

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Don't Interrupt People

When listening to people don’t rush them or be quick to reach conclusions too quickly. It can be easy to stop listening and interrupt when you hear something that strikes a chord. Practice listening without interrupting, you may well pick information that you weren't expecting that may change your first impressions. Give people the chance to finish and don't rush them.

Another common inhibitor to effective communication can be thinking about your response while others are still talking. This can mean missing a lot of what is being said due to not paying proper attention. Some people do this because they may not want to be seen as slow or rude if they don't answer soon after the other person finishes.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Active Listening Builds Trust

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Active Listening Builds Trust

Empathy is a powerful communication skill that improves communication and deepens interpersonal understanding in all areas of our lives. Anyone can become more empathetic if they're prepared to work at it.

Listening is one of the keys. Really listen, and not just with your ears. Look beyond the words and pay attention to body language, tone of voice and facial expressions. In communication there's always much more going than just the words. Work at truly paying attention and you'll get a much clearer picture of what's really being communicated.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Communication and Empathy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Communication and Empathy

Empathy is something that we all have in varying degrees. I'm sure we all know someone who is naturally a good listener and is always genuinely interested in people. Likewise, most of us know people who are rather self absorbed and take little interest in the concerns of other. People who are empathetic are generally excellent communicators and have the ability to build trust and confidence with the people they interact with. They can easily establish relationships and people like to be in their company.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Importance of Empathy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Importance of Empathy

Empathy is being able to put yourself into someone else's shoes and to see and appreciate their point of view. It is the skill that allows us to see and recognise another person's perspective and better understand their situation, their needs and the reasons for their actions.

Empathy is a key factor in successful personal relationships and a key quality of success in the business world. The absence of empathy is evident in destructive relationships, ineffective management and other ways people interact that can diminish self esteem and cause psychological problems.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How Would You Like To Be Thought Of?

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How Would You Like To Be Thought Of?

People's attitudes are infectious. Are yours worth catching? Would you rather be thought of as a person that brings joy to a room by entering it or by leaving it?

Anyone can become more optimistic and positive if they want to. This doesn't mean you have to completely change your personality and become an extrovert if you are naturally quiet or shy. Just working on your thoughts to ensure they are more positive will make you more optimistic. It will be obvious to other people and they will respond accordingly. More importantly, it will make you much happier and change your life for the better in many ways.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Pay Attention To Your Thoughts

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Pay Attention To Your Thoughts

For example, say something negative happens and you automatically find yourself thinking something like 'I knew that was going to happen', stop yourself right there! Now, replace that thought with something like 'what can I do to turn this situation around?' or 'what can I learn from this experience that will help me in the future?'

This will take concerted effort at first but will become easier as you keep working at. The rewards will be more than worth the effort and eventually you will find yourself automatically think mainly positive thoughts and having a more optimistic outlook on life.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We Can Change Our Thoughts

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We Can Change Our Thoughts

Awareness is the key. Recognising and accepting how much impact our thoughts have on our lives is the first step. The critical role our thoughts have on our lives has been understood and proved by countless observers and experts from the earliest philosophers right up to the latest brain researchers. It is an accepted fact hat we constantly think about becomes our reality.

The way we turn this to our advantage is to pay attention to what we find ourselves thinking about and actively work at changing our thoughts. This means becoming tuned into and actively analysing our thoughts rather than just going with the flow. To make this work we will often need to reject or reverse the thoughts we find entering our mind.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to be More Optimistic

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How to be More Optimistic

The key to becoming more optimistic is in our thoughts. We all have thousands of thoughts every day and many of these thoughts spring into our heads at random without any active input on our part. This is how we receive some of our greatest insights, most creative ideas and solutions to our problems.

However, many of the thoughts that automatically come to us are negative and some are much worse. We may not be able to control the thoughts that enter our minds, but we can choose and control what we do with those thoughts.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: People Respond To Optimists

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: People Respond To Optimists

Optimists are usually less dependant on other people for their happiness and they rarely feel the need to manipulate or control others. People generally respond positively to optimists and they are usually amongst the most popular people at school, work or in any environment.

The countless advantages of being optimistic are so clear that it'd hard to imagine why anyone would want to pessimistic. With few exceptions, most people don't. It's more likely that their background, their life experiences or society in general have made them veer towards the negative.

However, there are actions anyone can take to become much more optimistic.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Pessimists Often Prove Themselves Right

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Pessimists Often Prove Themselves Right

People who are naturally pessimistic are much more likely to have difficulty dealing with setbacks. They are likely to say things to themselves like 'why does this always happen to me' or 'typical' which serve no productive purpose whatsoever.

Worse still, they actually set themselves up for disappointments before anything even goes wrong. They think about things that have gone wrong in the past and expect to fail again. Unsurprisingly, they are often proven right, which only serves to make them even more pessimistic and negative.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Problems or Challenges?

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Problems or Challenges?

Optimists have their fair share of setbacks, but they tend to see them differently.
They tend to have 'challenges' rather than 'problems' they are more likely to ask themselves what they can learn from a situation and focus on finding a solution.

They are more likely to look at any negative experience and try and find something positive, or see it as a learning or growth opportunity. Being positive and having an optimistic outlook also makes it much easier to be proactive and to take action.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: More Reasons For Trying To Be Optimistic

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: More Reasons For Trying To Be Optimistic

Pessimism and depression often go hand in hand, and there are now more people than ever suffering from depression. Not only that, but the average age of the onset of depression is now so low that many teenagers a treated for depression. What was once considered a disorder mainly suffered by middle aged housewives is now much more widely spread across the population.

There are many different causes of depression and being more optimistic is certainly not a guaranteed cure. However, actively trying to adopt a more positive outlook on life and being more optimistic could make a difference and is well worth trying for many, many reasons.

Being optimistic and positive has been proved to enhance achievement in pretty well every field of endeavour, such as academic, athletic, occupational, political, and military to name a few. Optimists generally enjoy better health, longer life and suffer less from trauma, stress and depression. There are also countless examples of people confounding doctors by overcoming illnesses of all types, including supposedly terminal illnesses, through little more than their positive mental attitudes.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: You Can Choose Optimism

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We Are All Born Creative

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We Are All Born Creative

Even if you think you're not naturally creative, you're almost certainly more creative than you give yourself credit for. Think about yourself as a child. We are all born with plenty of creativity and imagination, but for most of us, this is one of the skills that become weaker instead of stronger as we get older. Formal education generally encourages conformity instead of creativity. As we are told to grow up, to be more responsible and realistic, our creativity is often stifled. But this doesn't mean it's gone forever - there are many simple things you can do to rediscover your dormant creativity and you will have a much richer life as a result.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Stimulate Your Senses

Getting more in touch with your senses will help with creativity. Close your eyes and take a couple of minutes quietly listening to the sounds around you and then describe what you hear. Do the same with your senses of touch, tastes, smell and sight. This will also help to make you more observant and in tune with the world generally.

Be more adventurous and try things you haven't done before. Forcing yourself to move out of you comfort zone and try new experience will increase you enjoyment of life, help you grow as a person, and stimulate your mind in all sort of beneficial ways.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Think Outside Of The Box

Most of us naturally think in a certain way that we find most comfortable. A great way to increase creativity is to actively try to think differently. Next time you have to do something or make a decision, try to take a different viewpoint to what comes automatically to mind.

What would happen if you did the exact opposite? How many different approaches could you take? Even if you end up doing what instinctively felt right, which first instincts very often are, the act of forcing yourself to consider other alternatives will help you to think more creatively.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Change Your Routine

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Change Your Routine

Try to do things differently and embrace the unfamiliar. This could be something as simple as taking a different route to work or going somewhere different for lunch. Try different activities and broaden your horizons. Maybe you think museums or art galleries are boring, but when did you last try visiting one? An excellent creativity flexing exercise you could try is looking at a work of art and thinking about what it means, or what the artist was trying to achieve.

If you haven't ridden a bicycle since you were a kid, try exploring your local area or further afield on a bike. You're sure to see things you don't normally see and you'll almost certainly enjoy it, not to mention being great exercise. Exposure to different experiences and places can help increase creativity by broadening our outlook on life.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Practice Being Creative

Even if you don’t think you are good artistically or with your hands, it's likely there is some activity you enjoyed when you were young that you haven't touched for years. It could still give you great pleasure now so try to rediscover it.

There are countless different activities and pastimes that will stimulate and strengthen your creative muscles. Even doodling is a creative activity that most people do. Look at your doodles, maybe you have artistic talent and could take up drawing or painting. What other talents could you have?

It's never been easier to join a class in your spare time. You'll also find books on any subject in libraries and bookshops that can get you started, not to mention the internet. Many things cost little to get started, and some don't cost anything at all, so everyone can get involved in something that will stimulate their creativity.
