Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Keep Your Eyes Open

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Keep Your Eyes Open

It's very easy to slip into routines that can mean that we effectively go around with our eyes closed. We see things but we don't take any notice. Be more questioning and curious. Try this to get you started - instead of just walking past shops, stop and look in the windows. Look at the way they've laid out the display and ask yourself why they've done it that way. What do you think they were trying to do, and did it work for you? What could they have done better? You can do the same with advertisements on TV, or billboards, or in newspapers or magazines.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Broaden Your Interests

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Broaden Your Interests

There are many simple things we can do to get our creative juices flowing. Develop a thirst for knowledge. Read everything you can get your hands on and not just within your usual range of interests. Broaden your interests and read about subjects you've never thought about before.

Knowledge can be addictive and you'll find that the more you know the more you want to know. This will help to keep your mind open to the infinite possibilities of the universe and help you to rediscover your sense of wonder at the world we live in. It may take a bit of effort to get into the habit, but if you work at making yourself a sponge for knowledge it will make a great difference to your creativity.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Unleash Your Creative Powers

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Unleash Your Creative Powers

Many people seem to think that only a lucky and gifted minority are born creative, or are able to be creative at will. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, creativity is something that can be worked at and developed in all of us. However, if we take the attitude that we aren't creative and don't make any effort to use our imagination or try to be creative, our creative skills will all but disappear.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: It Takes Effort But Is Well Worth It

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leadership Takes Effort But Is Well Worth It

Good judgement is an essential leadership skill. Leaders constantly face challenges and problems. They need to be able to assess the pros and cons of any situation and use their judgement to make important decisions. Your team will come to rely on your judgement and this will be an important factor in how effective you are as a leader.

Leadership is not easy and has to be worked at. It takes time and effort but the rewards that come from helping and serving others can be great. You can learn a great deal by studying the methods of people you work with and respect, or by reading about people you admire. Is there someone local that inspires you? Approach them and ask for advice. If they are a good leader they'll almost certainly be happy to help. True leadership is about helping and encouraging other people to develop, and this is one of the very best ways to help your own personal development and growth.

Self Improvement Quote of the Day:

'Leadership is not magnetic personality—that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not "making friends and influencing people"—that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.' – Peter Drucker

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Knowledge Is Essential

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Knowledge Is Essential

You need knowledge to be a leader. You need to know your strengths and weaknesses; you have to know how your organisation works and the culture, and the influential people; you need to know your job and be highly proficient and be able to train other people.

Leaders don't try to do everything, they recognise the skills of others and help them to use and develop their skills. This helps individuals to grow and develop and helps the organisation to achieve its objectives. They delegate and then let people get on with it without interfering, but are on hand to offer guidance if needed.

You need to know how to make decisions, to solve problems, to provide direction, to make plans and develop strategies. You need to understand human nature and know how to work with other people and get the best out of all your relationships and interaction with others.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leader Must Effectively Communicate

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Must Effectively Communicate

Good communication is essential, particularly two way communication and being prepared to listen. Some of the most effective communication is non verbal, especially the sort of examples you set. The best leaders show that they are willing to do anything they would expect anyone else to do.

When people are deciding if they respect you as a leader, it is more likely to be your actions rather than your words that are the determining factor. People want leaders that they believe will stand up for them rather than be self serving. People want leaders they can respect and that have a clear sense of direction and purpose, who know where they are going. They want leaders who will motivate and inspire them, give them direction, and help them to grow.

People respond to and respect leaders who will listen and seek to understand the concerns of their staff, and keep them informed of the bigger picture and their role within it.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Inspire Trust And Confidence

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Inspire Trust And Confidence

Leadership is about trustworthiness and high ethics, it's about who you are as a person, what you do, and the sort of example you set. Good leaders inspire trust, confidence and loyalty in their subordinates. The best leaders inspire can inspire people to do almost anything for them.

Your relationship and the way you deal with people, including your staff, is one of the most important leadership skills. The stronger your relationships are with people, the more confidence, trust and loyalty you will inspire

Never forget that it is your followers who decide how successful a leader you are. They have to be convinced that you deserve to be followed, and if they aren't, then you need to work harder on developing your skills

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Help People To Develop And Grow

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Help People To Develop And Grow

No matter what the size of the organisation or the circumstances, a good leader must have a clear vision of the overall goals and objectives, and be clear about the hierarchy and everyone's role within the organisation

A good leader concentrates on encouraging others to work towards common goals. He ensures all the people on his team are aware of the common objectives and the bigger picture so they feel involved. Good leader empower people and give them responsibility and the opportunity to grow as individuals.

People want to follow good leaders. They inspire confidence because they have a clear sense of purpose and know where they are going and how they are going to get there. They make sure that everyone working for them is aware to encourage them to feel part of the enterprise rather than just a minion blindly following orders. They also delegate to allow people to take responsibility and ownership, and provide encouragement and support.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Difference Between A Boss And A Leader

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Difference Between A Boss And A Leader

What exactly is leadership? To be a leader, you must be able to influence other people to achieve an objective. A leader is someone who can organise a team or group of people and motivate them to work towards a common goal.

One definition of leadership is "the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members"

Some people think that leadership is about power, or about driving or forcing people to do something that you want them to do, whether they want to do it or not. This is what a boss does, but not what a leader does.

This is the main difference between a boss and a leader. A good boss will always focus on getting results through leading and inspiring people rather than driving or forcing people through fear or orders. A good boss is a leader. A bad boss is just a boss.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Grow And Are Made, Not Born

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Leaders Grow And Are Made, Not Born

It has been said that leaders are born, not made, but is that really true? There's no doubt that different people are born with different natural skills and aptitudes, so some people may naturally be better at leadership.

Some people are born into families or environments that encourage and prepare them for leadership. However, environment alone does not guarantee that anyone will become a good leader. In some cases it will even do just the opposite as many people resent being forced down a path they don't want to go down.

Anyone that comes from an environment that encourages leadership will also have to want to want to develop leadership skills and be prepared to work at it.

Even supposedly natural leaders can't just rely on the gifts they were born with, they too will have to continue to develop their skills.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We All Need Leadership Skills

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We All Need Leadership Skills

Are leadership skills important? Leadership skills aren't just for CEO's of large organisation and presidents and prime ministers. It may not have occurred to you, but parents are leaders, so are brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, friends, team mates and colleagues. Leadership is certainly not just about business or work; it's an important skill in all areas of life. Some people my feel more comfortable being a follower rather than a leader, but that doesn't mean they will get through their lives without using leadership skills.

Even a young child who's been given his first puppy needs leadership skills. In fact that's one of the best ways for an adult to practice and develop their skills – by helping their child to develop theirs.

We could all benefit by thinking about and making some effort to become better leaders.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Anything Is Possible!

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Anything Is Possible!

Men and women have proved time and time again that the seemingly impossible is possible. We are all capable of much, much more than we ever give ourselves credit for. We can all have exceptional lives if we decide to.

Belief is the key, and without it, success is unlikely. Anyone who believes deep down that they can't do something, whatever it may be, is almost certainly right. But the critically important thing to remember is that anyone who believes and has no doubt that they can do something is also right. Anything is possible.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Next Steps

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Next Steps

Dreaming, using your imagination and defining what you want from your life are things everyone should do. And don't listen to anyone else, or your inner voice telling you to be realistic. You should dream big dreams, because big dreams will get you a lot more excited than small dreams.

If you totally, 100% believe you can realise your dreams, there's nothing that can stand in your way. However, belief alone is not enough. Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. You can have whatever you want, if you are prepared to put in the effort and pay the price. If want anything badly enough, if you have a burning desire, you will develop the iron willed determination, you will make the plans, you will take the actions and you will overcome any obstacle in your path to ensure you achieve your goals.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Eagle or Turkey?

Many people are negative by nature and seem happier spending time complaining about their lives rather than taking action and doing something to improve them.

The people you spend time with affect your thinking and you may have to escape your environment and move in different circles if you are committed to making positive changes. I think it was Brian Tracy who said that you can't expect to fly like an eagle if you spend most of your time hanging out with turkeys.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Dream Big Dreams!

Many of us set our ambitions way too low. We may have big dreams, but self doubt often creeps in and causes us to think that we need to scale them back and settle for much less because we need to be 'realistic'. Many people also let their environment, or their background limit their ambitions. Family and friends can even actively discourage you from striving to achieve your dreams because they don't have your vision or ambition and don't want to see you disappointed by failure. They may be well intentioned, but deep down they may not want to see you succeed and perhaps leave them behind.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: It Also Takes Belief

Obviously it took a lot more than just dreaming and imagination for any of these technological miracles to actually come about. It also took a lot of hard work, persistence and determination. No doubt there were many setbacks and disappointments, even outright disasters, that could have stopped them in their tracks. It also took a lot of character to be able to ignore all the sceptics and cynics and people who thought they were mad or told them they were wasting their time.

Perhaps more than anything else it took belief - belief in what they were doing and belief that they could and would do what they set out to do.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: There's So Much We Take For Granted

We take all these miracles of modern technology for granted, but can you imagine trying to tell someone living only 100 years ago that they would be able to fly anywhere in the world and drive their own car, that men would walk on the moon, or that they would be able to take a photo and send it to anyone in the world who could see it instantly?

Improvement Tip of the Day: Dreams And Imagination Can Achieve Miracles

Dreaming is where all achievement begins. It leads to questioning what has always been accepted and imagining what is possible. Without dreaming and questioning what is possible the wheel would never have been invented, nor the bicycle, nor the steam engines that powered the first trains and great ships, or the internal combustion engine that made cars possible.

It also took a great deal of dreaming and imagination for the first experiments in flight, for the invention of the jet engine, for air travel to become commonplace, for space travel to become a reality, and to send men to the moon.

Without dreaming and imagination we wouldn't have the incredible feats of engineering – massive bridges and tunnels, skyscrapers, ships the size of floating cities; and technology like instant communication, computers, the internet, ipods, mobile phones, digital cameras and so on.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Dreams Can Become Reality

Leaving our dreams behind can happen all too easily. Instead of experiencing exciting and fulfilling lives, far too many people, in reality most people, get caught up in just making ends meet.

Why does this happen? One of the reasons is that many people simply don't truly believe deep down that they can achieve their goals. They think that they can't actually do it, that it's too hard, or even impossible. They think they haven't got what it takes to achieve their dreams.

Fortunately, not everyone thinks this way. Can you imagine where mankind would be if they did? Some people have the determination, self belief and drive to succeed and refuse to be denied. They won't take no for an answer. These people have big dreams and have the drive and self belief to realise them. These are also the innovators, the inventors, the pioneers, the people that bring about breakthroughs in human accomplishment

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We Are All Dreamers

At some time in our life, we've probably all had dreams about being someone exceptional. I think I can safely say that every single one of us has sometimes dreamt about being like their favourite actor, singer, personality, sportsman or woman, or even the coolest or most popular kid at school. Many people have also dreamt how great it would to be rich, or successful, or in a great relationship with the partner of their dream, to name just a few popular aspirations.

It's very common to dream big dreams and to envisage much better lives for ourselves. However, all too often that’s were it begins and ends and the dreams never materialise and just become distant memories.

The New Year is a good time to think about making positive changes, but it's also important to realise we can decide to change our lives anytime we like. We can do anything we want if we want it enough and are prepared to pay the price. All it takes is a decision, not a vague wish, but a real decision - backed up by commitment, planning, belief, and most of all, action.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Emotion And Belief

To make visualisations and affirmation dramatically more effective, add emotion and believe you can succeed. Really feel and see yourself having achieved your goals and concentrate on how great that feels. Firmly believing you will succeed and focusing on how good it will feel and what it will mean to you to achieve your goals adds intensity and power. This will also feed your subconscious mind, that will in turn drive you on to greater success.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Visualisation and Affirmations Can Make A Huge Difference

Practice visualising your goal as already achieved. Experiments have proven that sportsman can improve their game by nothing more than concentrating on visualising themselves performing the way they want to perform. This is like watching of movie of yourself in your mind's eye. It may sound far fetched, but this is a very powerful and proven technique used by countless successful people in all walks of life.

Affirmations can help you to build self belief and talk yourself to success. The key here is positive wording and being set in the present tense. It's no good to keep telling yourself, for example, 'I will lose xx pounds' or 'I am xx pounds lighter'. Even adding a date won't help because these are stated as negatives and the first is also in the future tense. Focus on what you want, not what you don't want. Instead, say something like ' I am slim and easily fit into size xx clothes', or 'I weigh xx pounds and look and feel terrific'.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Be Prepared To Be Flexible

Don't be dogmatic about your resolutions, be prepared to adapt and change your plans or even your ultimate goals if you need to. That doesn't mean you should just keep extending your deadlines for the sake of it, or because you're feeling lazy. Circumstances change and things happen beyond your control that may affect your plans and the time you can commit to them.

You'll be less frustrated if you accept this can and probably will happen and are prepared to make allowances.

It will help if you keep records and monitor your progress. Write down what you've done and when you get results. It can also help to reward yourself in some way when you reach important stages along the way.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Importance Of Action Plans

One thing that will greatly help is to turn your resolutions into action plans. Write them down and break them into smaller steps and work on completing each step before you move onto the next one. Writing things down makes you more accountable and makes you desires more tangible. The very act of writing it down can set things in motion that may not otherwise have happened. Give yourself deadlines and make yourself accountable. Setting deadlines gives you focus, and they should be challenging but achievable.

But don't spend too much time planning; what is really required is action. Get started and build momentum, once you start moving it's much easier to keep moving. Before you know it you'll be on your way and feel great because you're getting somewhere and doing it rather than just thinking about it.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Any Resolution Must Be Much More Than Just A Wish

Many New Year resolutions are things people want to stop doing, or do less of, rather than things they want to do. You're more likely to succeed if you focus on doing rather than not doing. For example, if you want to lose weight and know you waste too much time watching TV, instead of resolving to spend less time watching TV, make your resolution to spend more time exercising.

For any resolution to succeed it needs to be much more than a wish or a whim – it takes commitment. You need to be determined to succeed and be prepared to put in the effort. Be realistic and honest with yourself. If you want to do something that you've resolved to do for the last two or three years and haven't achieved, why should you achieve it now? That's not to say you can't, but to be successful this time it will take serious commitment and action on your part and you'll have to do things you haven't done up until now.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Many Resolutions Don't Last Long

Why is this and what can we do to ensure we have more success with our resolutions?

Ask yourself why you're making any resolution you make. Does it really mean something to you?

Do you really consider it important?

Is it what you truly want or is it what you think you should want?

Many people make resolutions because it's what they feel they should be doing, or because it's what friends, family or the media tell them they should be doing.

If it's not what you really want there is little likelihood of success, so before making any resolutions takes time to think about what you actually want.

New Year Resolutions

This is the time of year that many of us feel the need to make a new start and think about making changes to our lives in the time honoured tradition of making New Year's Resolutions.

It seems that more modern resolutions relate to health and fitness than any other single subject, which isn't really that surprising, given that most of us will have overindulged in one way or another, and many of us in every way possible, in the lead up to New Years Day. Gym subscriptions are at their highest, and many people are going on diets, or taking up any of the countless weight loss options on offer. Attempts at giving up smoking also reach their peak in January.
