Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How Flexible Are You?

People who want to achieve success in their lives and are committed to self improvement know the value of setting goals and making workable plans for their realisation. These are essential steps to success and in our last few issues we’ve talked about many things that we can do to help us determine our goals and to set about achieving them.

Perseverance and determination are essentials for success. You need to have a burning desire to reach your goals and a total resolve that you will not be denied. You must be committed to achieving your goals, constantly hold a clear picture in your mind of you goals as already achieved, and be determined that you will succeed. And of course, you must take consistant action towards you goals.

But an equally important success skill is the ability to make adjustments, to change your plans and goals, or even abandon them completely if necessary. We need to be flexible and prepared to adapt to changing circumstances.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Are You Pursuing Perfection?

The unrealistic pursuit of perfection is a common reason why many people never find true success or happiness in their lives.

They may have the best plans and ideas but may feel they can’t start until everything is just right. There can be distractions or interruptions to deal with, and everything else must be completed before any new task, particularly an important task, can be started.

When perfectionists do start something, their quest for perfection can dramatically slow down progress and even result in the task never being completed.

They consider the unrealistically high standards they set for themselves, and often expect from others, to be a positive character trait.

The reality is that it’s actually more of a liability, and a handicap to achievement.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Put Your Creative Mind To Work For You! (cont)

To really get moving towards you goals, work at building up as detailed pictures as possible, and add emotional intensity by seeing yourself having achieved your goals, and enjoying the feelings that these achievements bring.

Work at visualising, and really seeing these pictures regularly, as repetition is necessary to ensure any old negative images are replaced. Try to clear your mind of any other thoughts first. When you are drifting off to sleep, or as you are waking in the morning, tend to be good times for many people, as the mind tends to be more receptive when not fully awake. Visualisation can also work very well when combined with meditation techniques. Experiment to find what works best for you.

This makes your subconscious, creative mind go to work motivating and guiding you to make the plans, break your goals down into manageable chunks, and take the necessary actions. It will also connect you to inexplicable forces that will assist you, and help to create the circumstance to ensure you achieve your goals.

If you make the effort to regularly focus on and visualise your goals, no matter what worries or problems you are facing, you will eventually find you are thinking about them most of the time, and that you become a more positive, optimistic, happy and successful person.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How Clear is Your Vision?

Visualisation is an invaluable skill to develop to enhance success and achievement. Why? Because almost every human achievement and creation throughout history was first enacted or created in the mind of a man or woman. A clear vision of exactly what you actually want is an essential step for any person serious about bringing their dreams to reality.

The more clearly you can see yourself having achieved your goals and enjoying the rewards, the more it is going to motivate you to make the plans and take the actions necessary to achieve your goals.

It’s also important not to be vague about what it is you desire, you must fill in as much detail as possible.

For example, if you decide you want an expensive sports car, to just keep telling yourself you want a sports car is of little or no use. You need to decide the make, model, colour, and all the features you want your new car to include. You also need add emotion - see yourself driving this car, smell the upholstery and feel the pleasure and excitement of owning the car, and the sense of pride and satisfaction of having achieved what you set out to do.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How Secure Is Your Financial Future? (cont)

It’s a sad fact that most people working for wages are no more than one or two paychecks away from bankruptcy, as they live from one payday to the next and have little or no savings. It is essential to save regularly, to make adequate health and unemployment insurance a priority, and to make provision for a comfortable retirement. This is just as important for employers, the self-employed and entrepreneurs. If not, there is the very real risk of losing everything you’ve worked long and hard for.

I’m not suggesting for a minute that money is a panacea, or that having plenty of it guarantees happiness or solves all problems. At the other extreme, there are many people that become obsessed with the pursuit of money at the exclusion of everything else.

Balance is certainly required, but it's reasonable to suggest that most people would find life easier if they didn’t have to worry about money, particularly as the they get older.

At the end of the day, everyone has to make their own decision whether or not to take the actions and make the plans for a secure future for themselves and their families. There are options - leave it to someone else, or just take your chances and hope for the best.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Why We Must Learn To Forget! (cont)

Are you still upset about a minor incident or disagreement with your partner, a friend or a work colleague, hours, or even days, after the event? Do you replay the incident over and over in your head and can’t forget about it?
Many people are even harsher on themselves. It’s possible to spend so much time mentally beating ourselves up over something, that it totally prevents us from moving forward.

Obviously it depends on how serious the incident is, or how serious we consider it to be. Sometimes we just have to try to be more tolerant and less demanding. But there’s no doubt that replaying and rehashing negative events and feelings is destructive and pointless and will do us no good at all.

Think about it, if you went to a movie and didn’t enjoy it at all, would you keep going back to see it over and over? Yet this is exactly what we can all too easily do in our minds.
