Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Try Not to Lose Your Temper

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Try Not to Lose Your Temper

Highly successful people tend to be more in control of their emotions. They are generally more relaxed, and stay quite calm in most circumstances. They don't allow themselves to get upset about little, or even big things. Try not to take things personally, or let yourself get involved in arguments or other people's problems. Try to remain objective and don't take sides.

There are times when most of us lose our temper, and sometimes it's better to let go and express what we feel rather than trying to bottle things up. However, most of us would benefit by better controlling the balance between our emotional and mental energies – or our hearts and minds.

Emotional or angry uncontrolled outbursts can massively drain our strength. Take your time responding to things, stop and think before reacting. It may not always be easy, but if you can do this you'll have more energy for more productive uses of your time.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: What You Eat Affects Your Energy Levels

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: What You Eat Affects Your Energy Levels

What we eat has a big impact on how much energy we have. Digestion takes up huge amounts of physical energy. Eating a healthier diet, particularly more lighter foods and more fruit, vegetables and whole grain products will give you more energy, as you'll need much less energy for digestion.

You'll also feel much better overall by cutting down on red meat and foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt. Limiting alcohol intake will also help. This doesn't mean that you should totally avoid everything you like eating or drinking, but if you eat less heavier foods you'll not only have more energy, but you'll appreciate them more when you do eat them.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Exercise Boosts Energy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Exercise Boosts Energy

Physical activity can be one of the best ways to boost your energy. Going outside and getting some fresh air, or doing some stretching will also help. A long walk, a bike ride or a workout at the gym will usually make you feel more energised, even if you started out tired. Many of us don't get any where near enough exercise.

Fitting more physical activity into your week and putting your body in motion will help you to relax and clear your mind. It doesn't have to be that much, even going for a walk a couple of times a week will make a difference.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Take A Break!

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Take A Break!

Regular breaks from work are another must. Weekends, vacations and holidays when we do no work at all can make a huge difference and go a long way to ensuring we are at our most productive and energetic when we are working.

Take time out to relax and rest. Take at least 1 or 2 full days off each week when you do none of your normal work. During this time just relax in whatever way you like, with friends or family.

Taking any time off can be difficult, particularly if you've just started your own business, but this will make you much more productive and ultimately you'll achieve much more than you would by working solidly without breaks.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We All Need Enough Sleep and Rest

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: We All Need Enough Sleep and Rest

Getting enough sleep is essential. We all need a certain amount of sleep to rejuvenate ourselves and replace the energy we have used each day. For most of us, this varies between six and nine hours per night, although some people can get by on considerably less, and others need a lot more.

We also need time at the end of the working day to just relax and unwind and clear our mind before sleep. If not, it can cause problems sleeping which will cause even more tiredness and stress.

It may sound obvious, but allowing yourself time to unwind and getting as much sleep as you need each night will do more for your energy levels that almost anything else. Sometimes this can be easier said than done, but it really should be a top priority for all of us if we want to be at our best.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Important and Exciting Goals Energise Us

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Important and Exciting Goals Energise Us

Having goals and feeling driven to work towards things that are important to you can be one of the best ways to feel energised. When you are inspired by things that matter to you, your motivation will be strong and you'll usually have plenty of energy to take the actions that will move you closer to your goals. If your reasons are important and compelling enough, you'll work tirelessly and often be able to perform near miracles.

You'll certainly have much more energy than you would if you lacked anything to motivate and excite you.

However, even when you have this level of commitment and motivation, you can burn out if you keep this up for too long without allowing yourself time to rebuild your strength.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Negative Energy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Negative Energy

One common setback to success is burning up energy in destructive ways. Although most of us don't now engage in much hard physical work, many of us waste huge amounts of emotional energy. This can take many forms. It could be something a common as having a generally negative outlook on life. There are many other examples, such as being over sensitive or easily upset, or being prone to emotional outbursts of anger. or even violence.

Negative emotions can massively drain energy levels, if fact a five minute outburst of anger uses about as much energy as eight hours of mental work.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Energy We Use Most

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: The Energy We Use Most

The other type of energy is mental energy. As many of us now work in knowledge based roles, we use a lot of this type of energy on a daily basis. This is the energy of creativity, decision making, writing, reading, learning new information and much more. Most of us now rely on our mental energy to survive.

How effectively we use our mental energy will ultimately decide how successful we are in our lives. It is our mental energy, through our thought processes, that determines our values and goals and the actions we take, which ultimately determine what we make of our lives.

How well we maximise the use of our mental energy and powers will be a major factor determining how successful and happy our lives turn out.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Negative Emotions Sap Our Energy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Negative Emotions Sap Our Energy

Unsurprisingly, negative emotions have the opposite effect. If you are feeling angry, upset or depressed, for example, you'll find your energy levels depleted and your resistance weak. You'll probably experience frustration and if you feel this way for extended periods, you'll eventually burn out altogether.

If you can maximise positive emotions and an overall optimistic outlook you'll find that you have more energy that you can put to good use in other areas of your life.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Physical Energy

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: Physical Energy

Physical energy is the most basic type of energy. This is the energy that's used in manual labour. People who are involved in this kind of work usually need to eat substantial quantities of food just to sustain themselves. In many cases, at the end of each day they will have little energy left over for anything more than relaxing and sleeping so they can rebuild their strength in preparation for the next day. This is the situation for much of the world's population, particularly in developing countries.

Fortunately, due to automation, labour saving inventions, computers etc many of us no longer have to work as hard physically as previous generations did. More people than ever are employed in knowledge based roles requiring little or no physical effort.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: What Can We Do To Get More Energy?

Getting enough sleep, relaxing and taking time off when you don't work at all, are the most obvious essentials to maintaining energy levels.

It will also help if we understand the different types of energy we use in our lives.

There is more than one type of energy. The main types of energy are physical, emotional and mental. Although these are distinctly different, they are closely related and interdependent.

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How To Increase Your Energy Levels

Self Improvement Tip of the Day: How To Increase Your Energy Levels

We all lead such hectic lives that being constantly tired or lacking energy can seem almost normal for many people. Just getting by can take up most of our energy, leaving little left to use to work towards our goals or building our ideal life.

It seems that most successful people have high energy levels. There may be exceptions, but I think it's fair to say that there's probably not that many examples of people who are constantly tired or exhausted, or burned out, achieving and sustaining high levels of success.
